PENNS GROVE — A borough man has been charged with attempted murder and other offenses after allegedly stabbing another person in the middle of a street Sunday, authorities say.
The incident took place shortly after 4:30 p.m. Sunday at the intersection of State Street and Railroad Avenue.
Marcellous Willitts, 28, of State Street in Penns Grove — along with attempted murder — was also charged with aggravated assault, possession of a weapon and possession of a weapon for an unlawful purpose, according to the Salem County prosecutor’s Office.
Willitts allegedly stabbed another Penns Grove man, 27, in his chest with a knife in the street.
A witness saw the incident and called 911. Penns Grove Police arrived on the scene to find Willitts and the victim still together, authorities said. Willitts reportedly fled the scene but was captured a short time later by officers.
The victim, who also suffered defensive wounds on his arm, was taken to Christiana Hospital, Newark, Delaware. The man, who authorities did not identify, remained there Monday for treatment of his wounds which authorities termed “non life-threatening.”
A knife was recovered from the crime scene.
A motive for the attack was not clear.
Willitts was taken to the Salem County Correctional Facility, Mannington Township, where he is being held on $150,000 bail.
